Your archetype is the biggest decision you make for your Virtual Pro. It sets your attribute ceilings, your Signature PlayStyles and the Specializations you can unlock. EA FC 27 has 13 archetypes, all unlocked from the start, and switching between them is free. Here’s the best one for every position, and what each archetype actually does.

What changed from FC 26

If you played Clubs last year, these are the changes that matter:

  • Engine is gone and Disruptor is in. EA’s FC 27 archetype list has 13 archetypes, with the Roy Keane-inspired Disruptor and no Engine.
  • Everything is unlocked. No more paying to unlock archetypes. Resets are free, you can move single attributes without a full reset, and switching archetype doesn’t cost anything.
  • Max level is 55 per archetype since Season 2, worth 1,419 Attribute Points in total. It started at 40.
  • Two Signature PlayStyles per archetype since Season 2. The first becomes PlayStyle+ at level 20, the second at level 55.
  • Specializations unlock when you hit one attribute at 92 and two at 90, and let you swap a Signature for a different PlayStyle+.
  • Masteries are new: levelling an archetype gives permanent +1 boosts to two attributes on every archetype you play (from level 10).
  • Amps are new: time-limited boosts you can equip for a set number of matches.

FC 27 Pro Clubs archetype tier list by position

The tiers are our judgement. The last column is data: what the top 100 clubs on EA’s leaderboard used in their last 10 league matches (967 matches, 1,059 players, 8 October 2026). EA only records a broad position group (forward, midfielder, defender, keeper), so the data can’t tell a CB from a full-back or a CAM from a CDM.

PositionS tierA tierB tierTop 100 data
GKShot StopperSweeper Keeper–Can’t split the two keepers; only 35 of 100 clubs had a human GK
CBBossProgressorRecyclerBoss 139 of 284 defenders (49%); Progressor 51, higher match rating than the Boss (7.44 vs 7.26)
LB / RBMarauderBossProgressorMarauder 58 of 284 defenders, second most used
CDMRecyclerDisruptorMaestroRecycler: best pass accuracy (86%); Disruptor: most tackles (1.73 per match)
CM / CAMMaestroCreatorMagicianMaestro 132 of 476 midfielders (28%); Creator: most assists (0.75 per match)
LW / RWMagicianSparkFinisherMagician 78 players, Spark 76; Magician scores more, Spark rates higher
STFinisherTargetMagician (second striker)Finisher 144 of 257 forwards (56%), most goals (1.14) and best rating (7.79)

Where we differ from the usage data, it’s on purpose. The Spark is in A tier on the wing although top clubs use it as often as the Magician, because the Magician pulls ahead as your opponents get better (see below). The Disruptor is A tier at CDM, not B, because it makes more tackles than any other archetype; it just needs a passer next to it.

Best midfield archetype

The Maestro. It’s the most used midfielder in the top 100 clubs by a wide margin, it has the highest average attribute ceiling and starting values of all 13 archetypes, and it works at CDM, CM and CAM. The other three are specialists:

Midfielder, per matchMaestroCreatorRecyclerDisruptor

Assists0.33✔ 0.750.080.08
Tackles1.661.461.48✔ 1.73
Pass accuracy82%78%✔ 86%83%

The ratings, assists, tackles and pass accuracy cover every match those players played, wherever they lined up. Pick the Creator if you’re the number 10 and want assists, the Recycler if you sit in front of the defence and keep it simple, and the Disruptor if you hunt the ball. If you’re not sure, or your club needs you all over the pitch, take the Maestro.

Goalkeeper: Shot Stopper

The Shot Stopper is the community default by a wide margin and the safer pick if your back line does its job. The Sweeper Keeper is the better choice if your team plays a high line and you want to rush out and help build from the back. Sources are split on which is “best”, so pick by style. See our full goalkeeper guide.

Centre-back: Boss

Every major source agrees: the Boss is the best centre-back archetype in FC 27. It’s built for overpowering strikers and winning aerial battles, and it has the best Physical ceiling of any archetype. If you’d rather be the one who starts attacks with long, accurate passes, go Progressor. Our best defender build covers both, plus full-backs.

Full-back: Marauder

The Marauder (Cafu) is the pace option for full-back: Quick Step signature, Rapid+ available, and the engine to get up and down the flank. If you care more about winning duels than overlapping, a Boss at full-back is a solid, defensive alternative.

Defensive midfield: Disruptor or Recycler

This is where the new archetype comes in. The Disruptor is the ball-winner: Jockey as its signature, aggressive pressing, and it’s the only outfield archetype that can reach 99 Stamina, which matters now that fatigue is back in Clubs. The Recycler is the calmer option: win it, then give it simply. If you want to be the team’s tempo-setter from deep, a Maestro works at CDM too.

Central and attacking midfield: Maestro

The Maestro is the strongest all-rounder in FC 27: it has the highest average attribute ceiling and the highest starting values of all archetypes. It works at CM, CAM and even CDM. The Creator has the best passing ceiling if you want to be a pure chance-creator at CAM.

Wingers: Magician or Spark

This is the closest call. The Magician is the all-rounder who cuts inside, combines and finishes, while the Spark has the best pace ceiling in the game and lives on speed and crossing. Spark is easier to pick up; the Magician tends to come out on top as the competition gets better. Our Magician build guide covers it in detail, and the best winger build puts the two side by side.

Striker: Finisher (or Target)

The Finisher is the clear pick for most strikers: the best Scoring ceiling and the most attributes that reach 99. Choose the Target if you’re building a tall striker (around 6’3” or more) for a team that crosses a lot: Precision Header as the signature and strong in the air.

Tips for choosing your archetype

Once you have a shortlist of outfield archetypes, try them in our build planner before you spend Attribute Points in game.

  1. 01
Try before you commit. Switching archetype and resetting attributes is free in FC 27, so test two or three.
  2. 02
Level more than one archetype. Masteries give +1 boosts to every build you play, so time spent on a second archetype still makes your main better.
  3. 03
Don't chase every Specialization. Specializations swap a Signature for a different PlayStyle+, they don't add one. Some builds do better spending those points on base attributes.
  4. 04
Pick for your club, not just yourself. A team of five Finishers loses to a team with a Disruptor and a Maestro.

Your body matters as much as the archetype, so check the best height and weight for each archetype before you lock in a build.
