Playing in goal is the most underrated job in Pro Clubs. A good human keeper is worth more than any striker, and most clubs are always looking for one. This guide covers everything you need for EA FC 27: which goalkeeper archetype to pick, how to build it, the controls, and the habits that separate a good Clubs keeper from a liability.

Shot Stopper or Sweeper Keeper?

FC 27 has two goalkeeper archetypes. Both are unlocked from the start, and switching between them is free, so you can try both.

The Shot Stopper is what most Clubs keepers play: it’s built for staying close to your line and dealing with shots from every range. The Sweeper Keeper suits keepers who rush out to deal with through balls and want to act as an extra passing option at the back, and it can be built a little taller (see our Sweeper Keeper build).

The best goalkeeper build

Height: go tall. Most competitive GK builds sit between 6’4” and 6’7”. The most popular Shot Stopper build is 6’5” and about 203 lbs (92 kg). EA hasn’t published exactly what height does for keepers, but a taller keeper covers more of the goal and claims higher balls. For context, check out the tallest goalkeepers in FC 27.

Attribute priority:

  1. GK Reflexes and GK Diving: the core of shot-stopping.
  2. GK Positioning: being in the right place makes every save easier. Since 22 October it’s the priciest of the four core stats on the Shot Stopper (about 467 AP to 99, against about 374 for the others), but good value on the Sweeper Keeper (about 374 AP).
  3. GK Handling: fewer spilled rebounds.
  4. Reactions, Jumping and Strength: close range and crosses (Shot Stopper).
  5. GK Kicking, Agility and Acceleration: distribution and rushing out (Sweeper Keeper).

You get 1,419 Attribute Points by the level cap of 55, and that isn’t enough to max everything: all four core GK stats at 99 cost about 1,589 AP on a Shot Stopper and about 1,739 on a Sweeper Keeper. Our Specializations list shows what each goalkeeper target costs, and resets are free in FC 27, so it’s easy to adjust once you’ve played a few matches.

Goalkeeper Specializations

Each GK archetype has two Signature PlayStyles, which don’t use a slot, and three Specializations. The first Signature becomes PlayStyle+ at level 20 and the second at level 55. Specializations unlock automatically when you hit one attribute at 92 and two at 90. Once unlocked, you can swap either Signature for the Specialization’s PlayStyle+ (and back) for free, but only one Specialization can be active. On top of that you get four regular PlayStyles, with slots at levels 5, 15, 40 and 55.

For a Shot Stopper, Shot Stopper+ is the cheapest to reach (about 455 AP), Octopus costs about 503 AP and Spider costs the most (about 559 AP). Careful with copied builds: the popular community build called “The Octopus” actually hits the Shot Stopper+ targets, not the Octopus ones (see our Shot Stopper build). For a Sweeper Keeper, Sweeper Keeper+ is the cheapest of any keeper (about 380 AP), then Launcher (about 428 AP) and Extra (about 559 AP). These costs follow EA’s 22 October changes (see our patch notes).

Pro Clubs goalkeeper controls (PS5, Xbox, PC)

These are the default Be A Pro goalkeeper controls for FC 27 with the Classic controller layout. Two independent FC 27 control lists agree on every input below, but we couldn’t find an EA text version, so check your in-game controls screen if you’ve changed your layout. While you’re in the settings, set up the best goalkeeper camera settings as well.

On PC with a controller, use the Xbox column (a PlayStation pad uses the PlayStation buttons). On keyboard, FC 27 replaced the old Classic and Alternate key layouts with two new ones, WASD (Default) and Arrows. EA only shows the key bindings as images on its mouse and keyboard help page, and we couldn’t confirm the goalkeeper keys from a reliable text source, so we don’t list them here. Keyboard-only players have also reported that some goalkeeper controls can’t be fully remapped.

How to dive properly

Diving is all about timing. Flick the right stick in the direction of the shot: left or right, up for a high dive, down for a low one. Dive too early and a good striker will simply place it the other way; dive too late and you won’t reach it. Watch the shooter’s body shape and the ball, not your own player.

When you’re not sure, holding L1/LB for auto positioning is your safety net. It keeps you in a sensible spot while you focus on the shot.

Positioning: the skill that wins games

Most goals a human keeper concedes start with bad positioning, not a bad dive.

  • Cut down the angle. Stay between the ball and the middle of the goal, and step off your line as the shooter gets closer so there’s less goal to aim at.
  • Follow the play. Shuffle with the ball as it moves across the pitch, so you’re never caught flat-footed by a quick switch.
  • Set pieces. For free kicks, set your wall and cover the side it doesn’t protect. For corners, stay on the near side with a clear view of the delivery.
  • Learn from every goal. After you concede, ask yourself: was I too far off my line? Did I commit too early? It’s the fastest way to improve.

When to rush out and when to stay

  • One-on-ones with no defender nearby: come out and close the angle. A big, fast-arriving keeper forces a worse finish.
  • A defender is getting back: stay patient and let them do their job. Don’t take them out of the play.
  • Through balls: decide early. If you can get there first, go; if it’s 50/50, stay and set yourself.
  • Crosses: only come for the ones you’re sure you’ll win. Coming and missing is worse than staying.
  • Read the opponent: if they shoot from distance, stay on your line; if they try to dribble through, be ready to come out.

Talk to your team

As a keeper you see the whole pitch, so use your mic. Tell your defenders who’s free, when to step up and when to drop. Call for the ball when you have it, organize the wall and the marking at set pieces, and keep the mood positive when things go wrong. Defenders who trust their keeper play better.

FC 27 things to know

  • AI defenders tackle less. In FC 27 AI teammates no longer auto-tackle dribblers as much, so more attacks reach you. Communication with your human defenders matters even more.
  • Drop-In bug. Some players report that choosing GK in 11v11 Drop-In puts them up front instead. EA has acknowledged the report.
  • Plenty of top clubs still use an AI keeper. Our meta data shows how many top 100 clubs use a human goalkeeper, so a good human keeper is a real edge.
  • Ratings can feel harsh. Keepers tend to earn lower match ratings than outfield players. Don’t judge your game only by the number.

Tips

  1. 01
Start with the Shot Stopper. It's the community default, and you can switch to Sweeper Keeper for free any time.
  2. 02
Level both GK archetypes. Their Masteries cover all four core GK stats for every build.
  3. 03
Use auto positioning when in doubt. Hold L1/LB while you read the shot.
  4. 04
Never dive early. Wait for the shooter to commit, then hold the right stick toward the shot.
  5. 05
Rush out late, not early. Hold △/Y only when you’re sure to reach the ball first, and let go to stop.
  6. 06
Learn the reaction dive. Holding R1/RB with the right stick triggers a reaction dive on demand. Practice it in a friendly before you need it.
  7. 07
Talk. A keeper on the mic organizes the whole defense.
Final verdict

Pick the Shot Stopper, build it tall, put your first points into Reflexes and Diving, and spend your time learning positioning, which is the part no Attribute Point can buy. If your club plays a high line and you enjoy being involved, try the Sweeper Keeper: switching is free in FC 27.

FAQ

What are the goalkeeper controls in Pro Clubs?

On PS5: dive with the right stick + direction, hold L1 for auto positioning, hold △ to rush out, tap ◯ to punch and ▢ to grab the ball. On Xbox (and on PC with a controller) it’s the same layout with LB, Y, B and X. The full list is in the controls table above.

How do you dive in Pro Clubs?

Hold the right stick in the direction of the shot: left or right, up for a high dive and down for a low one. Holding R1 / RB together with the right stick triggers a reaction dive on demand. Timing matters more than direction, so wait for the shooter to commit.

How do you come off your line in Pro Clubs?

Hold △ / Y to rush out toward the ball, and release it to stop. Use it for through balls and one-on-ones you’re sure to reach first. When you’re not sure, hold L1 / LB for auto positioning instead, which keeps you in a sensible spot.

What happened to goalkeeper traits and “talents”?

They’re gone. PlayStyles took over from the old traits in FC 24, and in FC 27 your keeper’s PlayStyles come from the archetype: two Signature PlayStyles (Far Reach and Deflector for the Shot Stopper, Footwork and Cross Claimer for the Sweeper Keeper), four regular slots, and a PlayStyle+ from one of three Specializations. See our guide to Pro Clubs Specializations.

Can you play goalkeeper on PC with a keyboard?

Yes, FC 27 has two keyboard layouts (WASD and Arrows), but some keyboard-only players report they can’t fully remap the goalkeeper controls. A controller is the easier option for keepers.
