The Shot Stopper is the Buffon archetype: a goalkeeper built to stay big on his line and make the difficult saves. In EA FC 27 its Signature PlayStyle is Far Reach, and it’s the default choice for a human keeper in Pro Clubs by a wide margin.
This guide goes deeper than our general goalkeeper guide: the exact build, how tall to go, which attributes are cheap and which eat your Attribute Points, and which Specialization is worth chasing.
What the Shot Stopper is in FC 27
EA’s description: a keeper who is calm one-on-one, makes difficult saves and can be relied on under pressure. Compared with the Sweeper Keeper, it starts with better GK Handling and is built around saves rather than distribution.
- Signature PlayStyle: Far Reach. EA describes it as a keeper who covers the net and extends their reach to save challenging shots. It upgrades to Far Reach+ as you level (around level 20, according to Pro Clubs HQ).
- Masteries: levelling the Shot Stopper adds +1 GK Positioning and +1 GK Reflexes to every archetype you play from level 10, and another +1 GK Reflexes at level 30.
- Max level 40, 962 Attribute Points, all archetypes unlocked and free resets, so switching to the Sweeper Keeper costs nothing.
Shot Stopper or Sweeper Keeper?
Pick the Shot Stopper if your back line defends deep or mid, if you want the safest save numbers, or if you’re new in goal. Pick the Sweeper Keeper if your club plays a high line and you want to rush out and start attacks. The community has voted clearly: Pro Clubs HQ’s build catalog has 33 Shot Stopper builds against 5 Sweeper Keeper builds. Here’s how the two compare at level 1:
| Starting attribute | Shot Stopper | Sweeper Keeper |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeping | ||
| GK Diving | 75 | 75 |
| GK Handling | ✔ 75 | 65 |
| GK Kicking | 65 | ✔ 75 |
| GK Reflexes | 75 | 75 |
| GK Positioning | 75 | 75 |
| Other | ||
| Agility | 50 | ✔ 65 |
| Jumping | 65 | ✔ 75 |
| Strength | 65 | ✔ 70 |
| Composure | 55 | ✔ 75 |
| Vision / Long Pass | 65 / 65 | ✔ 75 / 75 |
| Short Pass | ✔ 65 | 50 |
The Shot Stopper is the specialist: it keeps more of what it catches. The Sweeper Keeper starts more athletic and better with the ball at its feet.

The Shot Stopper+ Wall is the cheapest Specialization and the one the most-copied build actually unlocks. GK Handling means fewer spilled rebounds, Jumping helps with crosses and high shots, and GK Positioning is cheap on this archetype. The Octopus puts GK Diving at 92 instead, so it’s a better pure shot-stopper but costs a bit more and needs Strength 90, a stat you don’t use much otherwise.
Best height and weight for the Shot Stopper
The Shot Stopper can be built at 179–197 cm (5’10”–6’6”) and 80–100 kg (176–220 lbs). EA hasn’t said exactly what height does for a keeper, and there’s no reliable FC 27 testing yet, but a taller keeper covers more of the goal and reaches higher balls. That’s why almost nobody builds a short one.
| Recommended | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 6′5″–6′6″ (196–197 cm) | More reach; the most-copied builds sit at 6′4″–6′6″ |
| Weight | 85–96 kg (187–212 lbs) | Popular builds range from 187 lbs (Joan García) to 212 lbs (Courtois) |
| AcceleRATE | Not a priority | Default is Lengthy; most copied builds come out Controlled |
| Skill Moves / Weak Foot | 1 ★ / 1 ★ | Spend nothing here |
197 cm is the top-100 standard. In our data from the best 100 clubs, the median human goalkeeper is 197 cm, the Shot Stopper’s maximum, and half of them sit between 192 and 197 cm. If you want to go taller than that, only the Sweeper Keeper reaches 6’7”. For the real-world giants, see the tallest goalkeepers in FC 27.
Attribute priority and AP costs
A Shot Stopper starts at 75 in GK Diving, Handling, Reflexes and Positioning, and every one of them can reach 99. They don’t cost the same, though:
| Attribute | Start → cap | AP to max | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| GK Reflexes | 75 → 99 | ~467 | ✔ First, but the most expensive |
| GK Diving | 75 → 99 | ~374 | ✔ First |
| GK Handling | 75 → 99 | ~374 | ✔ 92 for Shot Stopper+ |
| GK Positioning | 75 → 99 | ~226 | ✔ Cheap: max it |
| Reactions | 75 → 96 | ~136 | ✔ Cheap |
| Acceleration | 75 → 92 | ~81 | ◑ Cheap, helps when rushing out |
| Jumping | 65 → 96 | ~216 | ◑ 90 for Shot Stopper+ |
| Strength | 65 → 96 | ~292 | ◑ Only for Octopus |
| GK Kicking | 65 → 99 | ~524 | ✘ Leave it |
Spend order for the Shot Stopper+ Wall:
- Shot Stopper+ targets: GK Handling 92, Jumping 90, GK Positioning 90 (about 343 AP, around level 19 if you spend everything on it).
- GK Positioning to 99: it’s the cheapest of the four core GK stats on this archetype.
- GK Diving and GK Reflexes with everything else. Reflexes is the most expensive stat on the archetype, so expect to finish in the 90s rather than at 99.
- Reactions and Acceleration if you have points left: both are cheap.
Don’t touch GK Kicking: it’s one of the most expensive stats on the Shot Stopper. If distribution matters to you, that’s a sign you want the Sweeper Keeper.
Specializations: Shot Stopper+, Octopus or Spider?
Each Specialization unlocks when you reach one attribute at 92 and two at 90, and lets you swap Far Reach+ for its PlayStyle+ (and back) for free.
| Specialization | PlayStyle+ | Unlock | AP | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shot Stopper+ | Cross Claimer+ | GK Handling 92 · Jumping 90 · GK Positioning 90 | ~343 | Most keepers (default pick) |
| Octopus | Deflector+ | GK Diving 92 · Strength 90 · GK Positioning 90 | ~391 | Diving-first builds |
| Spider | 1v1 Close Down+ | GK Reflexes 92 · Acceleration 90 · Agility 90 | ~553 | Keepers who rush out a lot |
Shot Stopper+ is the cheapest and fits the stats a keeper wants anyway. Octopus costs about 50 AP more and gives you GK Diving 92. Spider is the expensive one: Agility starts at 50 on the Shot Stopper, so getting it to 90 eats a large part of your budget, and you only reach it around level 27. If you want a keeper who comes off his line, the Sweeper Keeper is the cheaper way to get that. To compare them with every other archetype’s options, see all Pro Clubs Specializations.
PlayStyles for the Shot Stopper
You get one signature PlayStyle (Far Reach+, or a Specialization’s PlayStyle+) and three regular ones. EA’s own descriptions:
- Far Reach(+): the signature. Covers the net and stretches to save difficult shots.
- Footwork: the Sweeper Keeper’s signature, but available to you as a regular slot. It’s about using your feet to make difficult saves, not passing.
- Deflector: better control over where you parry the ball, pushing it into safer areas.
- 1v1 Close Down: more aggressive coming out to gather balls over the top and long through balls.
- Cross Claimer: comes off the line to claim high balls. Worth it if your club concedes from crosses; otherwise take it as Cross Claimer+ through Shot Stopper+.
Dexerto’s FC 27 Shot Stopper runs exactly Footwork, 1v1 Close Down and Deflector alongside Far Reach+.
Goalkeepers in the top 100 clubs
We analyzed EA’s public Clubs data for the top 100 clubs and their last 10 league matches (8 October 2026). EA’s match data can’t reliably tell the two goalkeeper archetypes apart, so these numbers cover both keepers together:
| Stat | Goalkeepers | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Clubs with a human keeper | 35 of 100 | Most top clubs play with the AI in goal |
| Players | 41 | About 4% of all players in the sample |
| Median height | 197 cm (middle 50%: 192–197) | Most build to the Shot Stopper maximum |
| Saves per game | 2.2 | Not many saves needed per match at this level |
| Match rating | 6.07 | Well below outfield players (7.24–7.79) |
| Pass accuracy | 81% | Similar to outfield players |
Two takeaways. First, a human keeper is a choice, not a requirement: 65 of the top 100 clubs used the AI. If your club has a reliable player willing to go in goal, they’re worth more than another outfield body. Second, don’t judge yourself by match rating: keepers are rated far lower than outfield players even in the best clubs. More on our Pro Clubs meta page, and the Shot Stopper’s full starting stats are on its archetype page.
FC 27 things a Shot Stopper should know
- EA is “pretty happy” with the balance between shooting and goalkeeping, according to its 30 September developer update. It will keep monitoring feedback, but no goalkeeping changes are announced.
- EA is investigating “1v1 goalkeepers behaving erratically” (The Grounds developer update, 2 October 2026). If a one-on-one save looks wrong, it may not be you.
- AI defenders auto-tackle less in FC 27, so more attacks reach your box. Talk to your defenders. Controls and positioning basics are in our goalkeeper guide, and defending basics in how to defend in Pro Clubs.
- 01Max GK Positioning early. It is the cheapest core GK stat on the Shot Stopper, and being in the right spot makes every save easier.
- 02Go to the height limit. 197 cm is what the top clubs use.
- 03Skip GK Kicking. It is one of the most expensive stats on this archetype. Throw it short instead.
- 04Level the Sweeper Keeper too. Its Masteries add GK Handling and GK Diving, which stack with your own GK Positioning and GK Reflexes Masteries.
- 05Check your Specialization. Copying a named build does not guarantee you unlock that Specialization. Compare the numbers with the table above.

197 cm (6’6”) at most; the range is 179–197 cm. The Sweeper Keeper goes up to about 200 cm (6’7”).
What is the Shot Stopper’s Signature PlayStyle?
Far Reach, which upgrades to Far Reach+ as you level. Its Specializations offer Cross Claimer+ (Shot Stopper+), Deflector+ (Octopus) or 1v1 Close Down+ (Spider) instead.
Which Shot Stopper Specialization is best?
Shot Stopper+ for most keepers: it’s the cheapest (about 343 AP) and its targets are stats you want anyway. Octopus if you’d rather have GK Diving 92. Spider costs about 553 AP and is hard to justify.
Is Shot Stopper better than Sweeper Keeper in FC 27?
For most clubs, yes: it starts with better GK Handling, and it’s by far the most-built keeper. The Sweeper Keeper is better if your team plays a high line and you want to rush out and distribute. See our Sweeper Keeper build.
The Shot Stopper is still the keeper to build in FC 27. Go as tall as it allows, hit the Shot Stopper+ targets, max the cheap GK Positioning, and spend the rest on Reflexes and Diving. Leave GK Kicking alone.
