The Progressor is the Fernando Hierro archetype: a centre-back who steps out of the line and starts attacks with long passes. In EA FC 27 its Signature PlayStyle is Long Ball Pass, and it has the highest Def. Awareness and Standing Tackle caps of any defender. It also has the cheapest outfield Specialization in the community AP data.
This guide covers the best FC 27 Progressor build, the right height and weight, which Specialization to unlock, and how to spend your Attribute Points.
What is the Progressor in FC 27?
The Progressor is one of FC 27’s three defender archetypes, with the Boss and the Marauder. Dexerto describes it as a modern centre-back who steps out of the defensive line to start attacks with progressive passing. What sets it apart:
- Signature PlayStyle: Long Ball Pass. It upgrades to Long Ball Pass+ as you level the Progressor. Lob and lofted through passes become more accurate, travel faster and are harder to intercept.
- Elite defending caps. In the community cap data, the Progressor can reach 99 Def. Awareness, 99 Standing Tackle, 99 Jumping and 99 Reactions. The Boss stops at 96 for the first two.
- Cheap where it counts. Def. Awareness, Standing Tackle, Long Pass, Composure and Slide Tackle are its cheapest attributes, and its weak foot upgrade is discounted too.
- Masteries: levelling the Progressor to 10 gives +1 Long Passing and +1 Standing Tackle to every archetype you play.
Progressor or Boss?
Most clubs shouldn’t choose: play one of each. The Boss is the stopper, with the best physical and aerial caps. The Progressor is the cleaner defender and the better passer, and it makes more tackles per game than the Boss in the top 100 clubs.
Take the Progressor as your only human centre-back if your club builds from the back and you’re comfortable reading the game. Take the Boss if your main problem is strikers bullying your defence or crosses into the box. Opinions differ here: Destructoid ranks the Progressor only B-tier, arguing that long balls from a defender aren’t much use in the current meta. The top clubs disagree: 47 of the top 100 clubs use at least one. Our best defender build compares the Progressor, Boss and Marauder side by side. For the other positions, see the best archetypes for every position.

The Progressor+ Ball-Playing CB is the build we’d recommend to almost everyone. Progressor+ costs about 211 AP, the cheapest outfield Specialization in the community data, because Standing Tackle, Long Pass and Def. Awareness are all discounted for this archetype. You’d max two of those three anyway, so the Specialization is close to free.
The Janitor Recovery CB is for clubs that play a high line and need a centre-back who wins footraces. The most-copied Progressor template on Pro Clubs HQ, a 5’11” Cannavaro, runs Quick Step in the signature slot, which is the Janitor’s PlayStyle+. It’s expensive: Acceleration and Sprint Speed are among the Progressor’s priciest stats. EA also cut Quick Step’s speed boost in FC 27 for both PlayStyle and PlayStyle+, so most players will keep Long Ball Pass+ and use the pace for its own sake.
Long Ball Pass+ or Jockey+? If you’re the passer in your back line, keep Long Ball Pass+. If your partner is a Progressor too, or your club plays short out of the back, swap to Jockey+ for one-on-ones. Respecs and swaps are free, so try both.
Best height and weight for the Progressor in FC 27
The Progressor can be 177–195 cm (5’10”–6’5”) and 75–95 kg (165–209 lbs). Its default body is 186 cm and 85 kg. Taller adds Strength, Jumping and Sprint Speed; lighter adds Acceleration, Agility and Sprint Speed.
| Recommended | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 6′1″–6′3″ (186–190 cm) | The top-100 median is 189 cm; tall enough to defend crosses |
| Weight | 75–80 kg (165–176 lbs) | Lighter keeps your Acceleration and turning up |
| AcceleRATE | Lengthy (185 cm+) | Needs Strength at least 4 above Agility |
| Skill Moves | 2 ★ | Not needed for a centre-back |
| Weak Foot | 4 ★ | The cap; about 25 AP from the base 3 ★ (discounted) |
Short or tall? This is where the data splits. The body players build most on Pro Clubs HQ is the minimum, 177 cm, and its most-copied template is a 5’11” Controlled Cannavaro. But the top clubs go tall: the median top-100 Progressor is 189 cm, and the middle 50% sit at 186–195 cm. Pro Clubs HQ also notes that 10 of its 12 top Progressor builds are 6’1”–6’4” and Lengthy. For a centre-back, we’d follow the top clubs.
Progressor Specializations: Progressor+, Pioneer or Janitor?
| Specialization | PlayStyle+ | Unlock | AP from base | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Progressor+ | Jockey+ | Long Pass 90 · Def. Awareness 90 · Standing Tackle 92 | about 211 | Every centre-back (default pick) |
| Pioneer | Pinged Pass+ | Short Pass 90 · Long Pass 90 · Dribbling 92 | about 516 | A Progressor at CDM |
| Janitor | Quick Step+ | Acceleration 92 · Sprint Speed 90 · Slide Tackle 90 | about 510–575 | High-line recovery defender |
Progressor+ is the default for a reason: it’s the cheapest outfield Specialization in the community data and its targets are core centre-back stats. Pioneer suits a Progressor used in midfield (about a third of top-100 Progressor appearances are in midfield). Dribbling 92 is expensive, though, and EA removed Pinged Pass’s small trap-error help for the receiver in FC 27. Janitor buys raw pace for a high line. To compare them with every other archetype’s options, see all Pro Clubs Specializations.
Attribute caps and where to spend your AP
You get 962 AP by level 40. Because Progressor+ is so cheap, you have more AP left after your first Specialization than on any other archetype.
| Attribute | Cap | AP from base to cap | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Def. Awareness | 99 | about 226 | ✔ First (cheap!) |
| Standing Tackle | 99 | about 226 | ✔ First (cheap!) |
| Long Pass | 96 | about 136 | ✔ To 90 for Progressor+ |
| Composure | 96 | about 136 | ✔ Cheap, calm on the ball |
| Slide Tackle | 96 | about 136 | ◑ Cheap if you slide a lot |
| Interceptions | 96 | about 332 | ◑ High, but expensive |
| Jumping | 99 | about 294 | ◑ For a tall build |
| Acceleration / Sprint Speed | 92 | about 249 / 237 | ◑ Expensive; Janitor build only |
Spend order for the Progressor+ Ball-Playing CB:
- Progressor+ targets first: Standing Tackle 92, Long Pass 90, Def. Awareness 90 (about 211 AP).
- Def. Awareness and Standing Tackle to 99. They’re discounted, and FC 27 gave manual defenders a longer stand-tackle range.
- Interceptions and Composure, so you win the ball and keep it under pressure.
- Strength until you’re Lengthy, then Heading Accuracy and Jumping.
- Acceleration with what’s left.
Test the split in the Build Planner (each build card above preloads its targets), and see every cap on the Progressor archetype page.
PlayStyles for the Progressor
- Long Ball Pass(+): the signature. More accurate, faster lob and lofted through passes. EA made lobbed through passes less assisted in FC 27 (they no longer steer toward open lanes from your aim), so a well-aimed ball from a Progressor matters more.
- Anticipate: better standing-tackle success, and the ball stops at your feet. It needs Balance 80, Def. Awareness 75 and Standing Tackle 80 (community data).
- Intercept: more reach in passing lanes. It needs Aggression 80 and Interceptions 80 (community data).
- Aerial Fortress: higher jumps in defensive aerial duels. It needs Jumping 75 and Heading Accuracy 75, which a tall Progressor starts with.
- Jockey replaces Aerial Fortress on the shorter Janitor build. It needs Agility 75, Def. Awareness 80 and Standing Tackle 80.
Where to play the Progressor
Centre-back: the natural home
Hold the line, win the ball, then look long first: a diagonal to your winger or a ball over the top for your striker. Don’t step out of the line to press unless you’re sure you’ll win it; you’re the last man more often than you think. Our defending guide covers the technique.
In a back three
A 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 is ideal for a Progressor: you can step into midfield with the ball while the other two centre-backs cover. See the best defensive formations for setups.
Can the Progressor play CDM?
Yes, and plenty do: about a third of top-100 Progressor appearances are in midfield. If that’s your role, consider Pioneer for Pinged Pass+. For a pure ball-winner at CDM, the Disruptor is the specialist; for a passer, look at the Maestro.
Progressor in the top 100 clubs
We analyzed EA’s public Clubs data for the all-time top 100 clubs: their last 10 league matches, 1,059 players who played at least 3 of them (8 October 2026). Full tables are on our Pro Clubs meta page.
| Stat | Progressor | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Usage | 7.5% of players (79) | Used by 47 of the 100 clubs |
| Position | 51 in defence, 27 in midfield | 3rd most used defender (Boss 139, Marauder 58) |
| Median height | 189 cm (6′2″) | Middle 50%: 186–195 cm |
| Match rating | 7.44 | ✔ Higher than the Boss (7.26) |
| Tackles per game | 1.26 | ✔ More than the Boss (0.89) |
| Pass accuracy | 79% | Boss 81%; long balls are riskier |
| Goals / assists per game | 0.07 / 0.07 | Boss 0.08 / 0.04 |
The Progressor is used half as often as the Boss but rates higher and tackles more. Its pass accuracy is lower, which is what you’d expect from a defender who goes long. And the top clubs build it tall, not at the 177 cm minimum.
Tips for mastering the Progressor
- 01Look long, but not every time. A long ball is a 50/50 if nobody is running. Play short when the run isn’t on.
- 02Aim your lobs. In FC 27 lobbed through passes no longer steer into open lanes for you.
- 03Max Def. Awareness and Standing Tackle. They’re discounted for you and both reach 99, higher than on any other defender.
- 04Pair with a Boss. The Boss wins the duel, you pick up the loose ball and start the attack.
- 05Watch your stamina. Fatigue is back in Clubs. Don’t follow every ball into midfield.
- 06Level the Progressor to 10 even if it is not your main. The Long Passing and Standing Tackle Masteries help every archetype you play.
FAQ
What is the best height for the Progressor in FC 27?
186–190 cm (6’1”–6’3”) at 75–80 kg. That’s where the top clubs build it (median 189 cm), and with a few points of Strength you’ll be Lengthy. Go 180–182 cm only for a pace-first Janitor build.
Which Progressor Specialization is best?
Progressor+ (Jockey+). At about 211 AP it’s the cheapest outfield Specialization in the community data, and its targets are core centre-back stats. Pioneer suits a Progressor at CDM; Janitor buys pace for a high line.
Is Progressor better than Boss?
Not better, different. The Boss is the most used defender in the top 100 by far, but the Progressor has a higher average match rating and more tackles per game. The best setup is one of each at centre-back.
Should I swap Long Ball Pass+ for Jockey+?
Only if you’re not the main passer in your back line. Long Ball Pass+ is the reason to pick the Progressor; Jockey+ helps in one-on-ones. The swap is free, so test both.
The Progressor is FC 27’s ball-playing centre-back and the best value build in Clubs. Unlock Progressor+ almost for free, max out Def. Awareness and Standing Tackle, and build it tall like the top clubs do. Pair it with a Boss and look for the long ball when the run is on.
