Picking a formation is the easy part. What decides whether your AI teammates help or hurt you in EA FC 27 Clubs is the FC IQ settings behind it: the build-up style, the defensive approach, the line height, and the role and focus you give every AI-filled position. This guide covers those settings. For choosing the shape itself, see our attacking formations and defensive formations guides.
How tactics work in Clubs
Since FC 25, tactics run on FC IQ. You don’t set sliders or player instructions any more. Each tactic has four parts:
- Build-Up Style: Balanced, Short Passing or Counter.
- Defensive Approach: Deep, Balanced, High or Aggressive.
- Line Height: a number from 1 to 100 that sits inside the approach you chose.
- A Role and a Focus for every position, such as Holding (Defend) or Inside Forward (Balanced).
FC 27 kept FC 26’s role list: we found no new or removed roles or focuses on FUT.GG or FUTBIN. Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and the Versatile focus all date from FC 26.
Roles drive the AI, not you
A role and its focus decide how an AI player moves with and without the ball. A human Pro goes wherever you take them, so the role on a human slot does nothing to your movement. It still matters in two ways:
- If that player leaves or the slot is empty, the AI takes over with that role.
- In FC 26, EA added a lobby role fit check and a role rating that judges your match performance on the actions your role cares about. EA hasn’t said whether that is unchanged in FC 27, so pick a role that matches what you actually do.
With 10 humans, the only role that really steers anyone is your AI goalkeeper’s.
Who sets tactics in a Clubs match?
The club manager. Clubs tactics in FC 27 work the same way as in FC 26 (we checked the menus in game on 8 October 2026): the club has five tactic slots (Tactic 1 to Tactic 5), one of them Active, and each is built from a Tactical Preset or set to Custom, then a formation, Build-Up Style, Defensive Approach and the Player Roles tab. Every saved tactic shows a share code (a 12-character string under its name) that you can give to other clubs, and the edit screen lists the tactic’s strengths and weaknesses, such as “Players Rarely Tire” or “Approach Too Narrow”. To edit one, go to My Club → Tactics → Enter Tactics → Edit Tactic; to load someone else’s, open Manage Tactics → Import and type the code (the game rejects a code with a single wrong character). You can also change formation from the Play screen before kick-off. EA hasn’t said who can switch tactics with the D-pad during a match; in older games that was the captain in the lobby, so check the rights in your Clubhouse before kick-off.
One known issue to watch: EA’s 29 September known-issues list includes “custom tactics may fail to save”. It doesn’t name a mode, so check your roles in the lobby before every session.
Best build-up style
| Build-Up Style | What it does (EA) | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Counter | Players look to get in behind the defense; quick transition | You have quick human attackers, or 2–5 humans who win the ball deep and break |
| Balanced | A mix of forward runs and players coming short | Mixed human/AI squads; the safe default |
| Short Passing | Players come short to support the ball carrier; patient transition | Human midfielders who pass together, often in narrow shapes like 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow |
Our pick: Counter for most Clubs sides, Balanced if your attackers are mostly AI. In Clubs the humans make the runs anyway, and Counter tells your AI attackers to go beyond them rather than come towards the ball. Pro Clubs HQ’s FC 27 league data has Counter on its two most common setups (4-2-1-3 and 4-4-1-1 Midfield) and Short Passing on the narrow two-striker shapes. In Ultimate Team, FUT.GG shows Balanced as the most used style for 4-2-1-3, which is a different game: one person controls everyone.
Best defensive approach and line height
The defensive approach and the line height are linked. EA published these bands for FC 25:
| Defensive Approach | Line Height | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep | 1–30 | 25 | Safety first; the line drops deep |
| Balanced | 31–60 | 50 | Flexible defending with a medium line |
| High | 61–90 | 70 | Higher line, situational pressure |
| Aggressive | 91–100 | 95 | Front-footed: presses at once and plays offside |
EA hasn’t restated these bands for FC 27. FC 27 setups on FUT.GG still fit them, and the Tactics Board uses them, but treat the exact limits as FC 25 figures.
Our pick: Balanced, Line Height 40–55. Go to the lower end with AI centre-backs or a slow back line, and the upper end with quick human defenders. We’d avoid High and Aggressive in Clubs unless both centre-backs are human and fast: one AI defender stepping up late plays everyone onside.
What FC 27 changed
EA tuned defending after the closed beta (Closed Beta Feedback Update, 3 September 2026):
- Lower depth settings are clearer. Defenders retreat sooner and hold a more conservative line, leaving less space in behind. A low line doesn’t mean they stay deep in every situation.
- Team Press does nothing in your defensive third. You can’t press your way out of trouble near your own box.
- Defenders who step out press less well than midfielders and forwards, and they leave space in behind when they do.
Add the FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive’s change that AI defenders no longer auto-tackle (they hold position and support the play) and the lesson is simple: your line height protects space, your humans win the ball. If you keep getting beaten in behind, drop the line before you change formation. More on that in how to defend in Pro Clubs.
Best roles for AI players
Set roles for the AI-filled positions first. The fewer humans you have, the safer those roles should be.
2–4 humans
Most of your team is AI, so keep it compact and put your humans in the spine: centre-back, holding midfield, striker. Pro Clubs HQ’s data agrees that human defenders matter: clubs with two or more human defenders win “+3.6 points more often” than clubs of the same size without them.
| AI position | Role (Focus) |
|---|---|
| Centre-backs | Defender (Defend) |
| Full-backs | Fullback (Defend), or Wingback (Support) in a back five |
| CDMs | Holding (Defend); a second one as Deep-Lying Playmaker (Build-Up) |
| Central midfield | Box-to-Box (Balanced) or Holding (Defend) |
| Wide midfield | Wide Midfielder (Defend) |
| Wingers | Inside Forward (Balanced) |
| Striker | Advanced Forward (Attack) or Target Forward (Balanced) |
5–7 humans
Now the AI fills the gaps around your humans. Keep at least one AI holding midfielder on Defend and both AI full-backs conservative, then let one AI attacker be more adventurous: Shadow Striker (Attack) at CAM, or Inside Forward on the wing so your human winger has someone arriving at the far post.
8–10 humans
Only two or three positions are AI, and they are usually full-back, centre-back and goalkeeper. Give them the safest roles: Fullback (Defend), which tucks in to make a back three in possession, and Defender (Defend). Your humans will push on; the AI should be the one that stays home.
Best AI goalkeeper role
Only 12.6% of clubs put a human in goal, according to Pro Clubs HQ, and those clubs did slightly worse than same-size clubs with an AI keeper. So your AI goalkeeper’s role is probably the most important one in your tactic.
| GK role (Focus) | Behavior | Use with |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper (Defend) | Won’t rush out for long or loose balls | ✔ Any line up to about 60; our default |
| Goalkeeper (Balanced) | Occasionally leaves the area | A medium line |
| Sweeper Keeper (Balanced) | Leaves the area to collect balls near the box | ◑ High lines only |
| Ball-Playing Keeper (Build-Up) | Pushes up to support play, stays on the line when defending | Short Passing sides |

4-2-1-3: the most common shape at the top
Pro Clubs HQ calls 4-2-1-3 “the most common shape at the top of the game”, based on EA match data from about 99,000 FC 27 league games. It’s one source and the method isn’t described, so treat it as a strong hint, not proof. One CDM holds, the other builds, the wide forwards cut inside and the CAM runs beyond the striker.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Build-Up / Defence | Counter · Balanced, line 55 |
| GK | Goalkeeper (Defend) |
| LB · RB | Fullback (Balanced) · Fullback (Defend) |
| LCB · RCB | Defender (Defend) |
| LDM · RDM | Holding (Defend) · Deep-Lying Playmaker (Build-Up) |
| CAM | Shadow Striker (Attack) |
| LW · RW | Inside Forward (Balanced) |
| ST | Advanced Forward (Attack) |
| Humans first | A centre-back, the holding CDM, then CAM and striker |

4-2-3-1 Wide: the safer back four
The shape our attacking and defensive guides both recommend as the all-rounder. Two holding midfielders, a lower line and one wide player who tracks back make it forgiving with 3–7 humans.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Build-Up / Defence | Balanced · Balanced, line 45 |
| GK | Goalkeeper (Defend) |
| LB · RB | Fullback (Defend) |
| LCB · RCB | Defender (Defend) |
| LDM · RDM | Holding (Defend) · Deep-Lying Playmaker (Build-Up) |
| LM · RM | Wide Midfielder (Defend) · Inside Forward (Balanced) |
| CAM | Playmaker (Balanced) |
| ST | Advanced Forward (Attack) |

5-3-2: the back five for small squads
For 2–5 humans or seeing out a lead. Five defenders block space now that AI defenders don’t tackle, and Counter gets the ball to two strikers quickly. The wing-backs are on Support, so they only attack when you have controlled possession. The shape is listed as 5-3-2 Holding in some menus and databases.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Build-Up / Defence | Counter · Balanced, line 35 |
| GK | Goalkeeper (Defend) |
| LB · RB | Wingback (Support) |
| LCB · CB · RCB | Stopper (Balanced) · Defender (Defend) · Defender (Defend) |
| CDM | Holding (Defend) |
| LCM · RCM | Box-to-Box (Balanced) · Deep-Lying Playmaker (Build-Up) |
| LS · RS | Advanced Forward (Attack) · Target Forward (Balanced) |

These are our setups from years of 11v11 Clubs, built around the FC 27 changes above. They aren’t copied from usage data, apart from the 4-2-1-3 build-up and line, which follow Pro Clubs HQ.
Fatigue changes which roles you can afford
EA “reintroduced long-term fatigue in Clubs in Title Update v1.0.1” (The Grounds developer launch update, 2 October 2026). At launch, stamina was effectively free, which is why 3-5-2 with wing-backs running both ways was everywhere.
Now stamina-hungry roles cost you late in the game. Attacking Wingback and Wingback are the obvious ones, and so is a human full-back who sprints every overlap. If your wide defenders fade after an hour, switch them to Fullback or Wingback (Support), or move to a four-back shape. EA says it is still watching how the change feels, so this may be tuned again.
Tips
- 01Set the AI roles first. Human Pros ignore roles. Spend your time on the slots the AI will fill, starting with the goalkeeper.
- 02Lower the line before you change shape. FC 27 makes low lines retreat sooner. It’s the quickest fix for balls in behind.
- 03Don’t count on Team Press near your box. It has no effect in your defensive third in FC 27.
- 04Keep one AI midfielder on Defend. With fewer than eight humans, someone has to screen the back four.
- 05Save a second, safer tactic. Have a back-five or 4-2-3-1 setup ready for when you go ahead.
- 06Re-check after each session. EA lists custom tactics failing to save as a known issue, so confirm your roles before kick-off.

FAQ
What is the best build-up style in FC 27 Clubs?
Counter for most clubs, because it sends AI attackers in behind while your humans create. Use Balanced if most of your attackers are AI, and Short Passing only with human midfielders who pass together.
What line height should I use in Pro Clubs?
About 40–55 on the Balanced approach. Go lower with AI or slow centre-backs, higher only with quick human defenders. FC 27 makes low lines drop sooner, so a low line is safer than it used to be.
Do tactics affect human players in Clubs?
Not their movement. Roles and focuses steer AI players. A human Pro goes wherever they’re controlled, though the role may still affect the lobby role fit and match rating (as it did in FC 26).
Who can change tactics in a Clubs match?
The club manager sets up the club’s tactics: up to five saved tactics, one active at a time, the same as FC 26. Who can switch tactics during a match isn’t confirmed for FC 27, so check the rights in your lobby. Paste your tactic’s share code into our Tactics Board to keep it with the plan you send your club.
What is the most common Clubs tactic in FC 27?
According to Pro Clubs HQ’s FC 27 league data, 4-2-1-3 with Counter build-up and a line around 55. It’s the only Clubs-specific usage data we’ve found, so treat it as one source.
